Ouriginal

Created at May 10, 2022, , Views: 29

EBS uses in study process plagiarism detection software Ouriginal (previously Urkund).

With the help of Ouriginal it is possible to check the originality of written papers, i.e. compare them to texts in Estonian and English available on the internet and in different databases. The aim of Ouriginal is to prevent plagiarism and raise awareness of plagiarism.

Students can’t check their assignments with Ouriginal by themselves.

The lecturer can activate Ouriginal plugin in course assignment settings in Canvas. When student submits the assignment, it will be automatically checked by Ouriginal. The lecturer can see the report and can determine whether the report is also shown to the student. If the showing is allowed, student can see it beneath Grades.

As a result of text comparison, Ouriginal prepares a report showing to what extent the analyzed text coincides with other texts (incl. properly cited quotes). The report also shows which parts of the text coincide with other texts.

Ouriginal compares uploaded texts to three types of sources – materials available on the internet, publications in databases, and other student papers. When using Ouriginal it is important to understand that Ouriginal does not specify whether or not the text is plagiarised. The lecturer can check whether the student has referenced correctly, and in the event that plagiarism is detected can explain to the student what they have done wrong.

Written papers uploaded to the Ouriginal database will remain there. These papers are in turn used as a source against which other uploaded works are compared. Ouriginal does not have a work publishing environment and uploaded works are not searchable in the database. Uploaded written papers will only be shown to other users if there is an overlap with parts of that inquiry.
